At some point during the ownership of the electric bike, it may become necessary to replace the stator motor. It is rare that they fail, but sometimes this does happen. The video below shows a great overview to help remove the stator motor. The following article goes over how this process is done and what to expect when you open up the hub. On the models shown in the video, they have a quick disconnect. a The Revv 1 and Rift are similar in removing the stators. The Rift does not have a quick disconnect, the Rift has a solid cable running from the rear wheel into the frame that has to be disconnected and removed from the frame to remove the rear wheel.

Tools needed

  • Screwdriver with appropriate screw head type, some models use Philips head screws (Left photo), Torx screws (Center photo), and also Torx security screws(Right photo)

  • If a screw is stripped, a screw extractor kit like these screw extractor kit will be needed to remove the stripped bolts. A local bike shop may be able to assist with removing the stripped bolts.
  • A chain whip and cassette lockring tool like this linked chain whip and cassette lockring tool comes with both tools needed.
  • 2 adjustable wrenches or 2 properly sized wrenches (be careful to properly adjust them and not damage the nuts).
  • Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease - A good lubricant to use for the planetary gears.

Steps

  1. Remove the rear wheel from the bike. If unsure of how to do this, the following link can help: How To Remove The Rear Wheel
  2. Remove the cassette from the wheel using a chain whip and the lockring tool. Using a crescent wrench on the cassette lockring tool can help loosen the lockring (This is only necessary if the replacement motor does not have a cassette).
  3. Remove the six stator bolts from the hub, as seen below in the image. Some models use Philips head screws and some use torx bits. We recommend using the proper size bit or tool to avoid stripping or damaging the bolt as this type of damage is not covered by the warranty.
  4. Remove the recessed axle nut on the brake rotor side. After the nut on the brake rotor side is removed, cradle the cassette side of the stator to prevent the stator from falling out of the rear hub while tapping the brake rotor side in the next step.
  5. Cradle the cassette side of the motor and carefully pull the stator motor out of the bike's rear hub while carefully tapping on the end of the disc brake side axle with a mallet or hammer. This helps dislodge the stator if it's stuck or hard to remove.
  6. Before installing the new stator motor in the rear hub, we recommend lightly greasing the planetary gears. When lubricating inside the rear hub, do not overload the rear hub with the grease as the gears will push the grease out and could damage electrical components.
  7. Reinstall the disc side axle nut. Tighten the axle nut until it barely touches the bearing and then turn it one and a half turn more to set the axle nut properly.
  8. Reinstall the six stator bolts in a criss-cross or star-shaped pattern. Do not over-tighten these bolts.
  9. Reinstall cassette.
  10. Tighten the cassette lockring. Reinstall the rear wheel properly, if assistance is needed with putting the wheel back on the bike, please use this article: How To Remove The Rear Wheel. Failure to do so could damage your new motor cable, the bike or cause injury.

Revv 1 Stator removal

  1. Remove the rear wheel using these instructions: Revv 1 Rear Wheel Removal
  2. Remove the brake rotor and the freewheel using a freewheel tool.
  3. Remove the 6 bolts from the drive side of the hub with a 3mm hex wrench.
  4. Remove the 6 bolts from the non drive side of the hub with T20 Security Torx wrench
  5. Gently tap the non drive side axle with a hammer or mallet while holding the stator side with a free hand. Use the axle nut to protect the threads, this will dislodge the drive side motor cover plate. The stator can now be removed from the hub.
  6. Note the spacer on the drive side axle, this will need to go back in place
  7. Reverse the process to reinstall, do not forget the spacers.

Rift Stator Motor Removal

The main difference is that the Rift has a solid cable running from the rear wheel into the frame.

  1. Remove the rear wheel from the bike. If unsure of how to do this, the following link can help: How To Remove The Rear Wheel
  2. The extra step to remove the rear wheel from the Rift is to access the controller to unplug the stator motor connection, this can be done by removing the cover on the left side of the bottom bracket area.
  3. Next, move the internal controller aside to expose the motor cable plug. Unplug the motor stator connector from the controller and pull the cable back through the chain stay.
  4. Rever the process to reinstalled the wheel and motor cable connection at the internal controller.
