Your new add on battery kit comes with all of the parts needed to install this kit onto a Roadster V2, V3, or CF Racer1 model bike. You will not use all of the parts that came in the kit and will only need to use the parts required for the model that you own. This guide will go over installing and using the add on battery kit on a Ride1Up Roadster V2 model bike.

Before we install this kit onto your bike lets go over some of the basics of this add on battery and how the system works. The battery itself has a few different buttons on the bottom that all have different functions

  1. The battery charge port can be found under the rubber cover. This battery will have to be charged separately from the in frame battery and uses the same charger as the bike (second charger included in the kit).
  2. The battery will have to be plugged into the bike through this plug. The wire side of the plug screws onto the battery for a secure connection.
  3. The power button will turn the battery on and off. The battery is on when the button is depressed and off when the button is raised.
  4. When pressed, this button will tell you the charge state of the battery. Blue is above 90%, green is 50-90%, red is 20-50%, and flashing red is below 20%. The charge indicator will only work when the battery is turned on.
  5. This USB port can charge devices when the battery is turned on.

Once the battery is installed, charged, and turned on, the system will automatically pull power from which ever battery is more charged, or both if equally charged, and there is nothing required by the rider to activate the system. The only way you will know the system is working is that the battery will drain much slower and you will be able to ride much further. It is that simple!

Now that you know how the system work, lets get into how you can install this kit onto your Roadster V2.

Step 1: Access the motor controller

Flip the bike over onto its handlebars and seat taking care to not rest the bike on the brakes or display. You may need to rotate the display and brakes on the handlebars to ensure they do not get damaged. Remove the access panel near the bottom bracket of the frame by removing the two bolts on each side of the downtube.  Now remove your motor controller and disconnect the yellow power connector to the battery.

Step 2: Plug in the battery balancer

Now that the controller is unplugged from the battery the new battery balancer can be plugged in between the controller and battery. Plug the "Battery plug" connector into the battery, the "Controller plug" connector into the controller, and the second "Battery plug" connector into the extension wire that will lead to the add on battery.

Step 3: Fit the components back into the frame.

The hardest part of this whole process is fitting all of these components back into the downtube of the frame as it is a very tight fit. All of the parts will fit into the frame with some wire management and diligence and here are some tips that we found made this process easier:

  • Start by installing the motor controller into the frame with the side without the wires going into the frame first.
  • Push the electrical connectors into the space between the side of the controller and the downtube as shown in the illustration below.
  • Push all black connectors to one side of the controller and all yellow connectors to the other as shown in the illustration below.
  • The balancer and battery plug to the add on battery can be installed last on top of the controller as shown in the photo below.

After the components have been fit into the downtube of the frame, the new access panel can be installed with both the motor and add on battery wiring coming out the larger hole.

Step 4: Mount the add on battery and route the wire.

Now that the hard part is behind you, all that is left is to bolt the add on battery mount to the water bottle mount on the seat tube of the frame and route the wire to the mount.

Here are some tips to make this step as easy as possible.

  • Use one of the Zip ties to tie the wire to the cable guide near the bottom bracket in order to keep the wire safely away from the rear tire and cranks.
  • When inserting the battery into the mount, rotate the battery so that the plug on the bottom is as close to the seat post as possible. This will give you the wire length to be able to most easily plug the battery into the bike.
